The regulatory framework
India regulates food, beverages and nutraceuticals through FSSAI (the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India), with a separate AYUSH framework (Ayurveda, Yoga, Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy) for traditional products. FSSAI sets standards for additives, labelling, and claims across all packaged food and drink, and proposed restrictions on high-risk food category registrations in 2025.
On roadmap
India's FSSAI framework for food and beverages, plus the AYUSH route for traditional products, is one of the least-documented for foreign brands entering from ANZ or SEA.
